The Courage To Love
The easy road is broad and fair,
Yet love has never traveled there.
For love begins where comfort ends,
And gives before it comprehends.
The safest road is smooth and bright,
Yet never climbs the mountain’s height.
The cautious heart shuns every sea,
But never learns what makes it free.
The rose unfolds through wind and rain,
And blossoms stronger from the pain.
The deepest roots embrace the stone,
For strength is never softly grown.
Your soul did not arrive to spare
The cost that every heart must bear.
It came to learn what stars have known:
Love keeps no kingdom for its own.
For love is not a guarded flame,
Nor beauty kept for pride or name.
It is a candle in the storm,
That keeps another’s spirit warm.
It wakes before the morning light,
Keeps silent watch throughout the night.
It breaks its bread, forgives, endures,
And gives far more than it secures.
How poor a life that clings to ease,
Like captive ship on windless seas
The harbor guards the painted mast,
Yet never lets the voyage last.
Come walk with me where wild roads climb,
Beyond the measured clocks of time.
If comfort wishes to depart,
We’ll choose the kingdom of the heart.
When every fear has had its say,
And every shadow yields to day,
One truth shall light the skies above:
The freest souls are ruled by Love.
